The American people deserve a tax system that is (1) Fair, (2) Simple and (3) Transparent.

With the FairTax, you keep what you earn!

The FairTax would change the way our Federal government collects taxes.  With the FairTax, the government no longer collects Income Tax, Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax, which means every American citizen would bring home everything they make.

The government would no longer collect Payroll Tax, which means employers don't get taxed for paying their employees or see that tax increase every time they give their employee's a raise.

The government would no longer collect Estate Tax and Capitol Gains Tax which means American citizens don't get again on income they have already paid taxes on.

No more income tax returns!

The FairTax calls for the government to abolish the IRS, with all of its forms, deductions, revisions, brackets, and loopholes, and replace it with a single tax, a fair tax.  This Fair Tax is a national consumption tax (like a sales tax) on all NEW goods and services at the retail level at the rate of 23% percent.

What this means is that a tax is added to the price of every NEW good or service that is sold at the retail level.  This would eliminate the payroll tax that takes 7.65% of the average worker's gross pay.

This would eliminate the income tax, and you, as an individual, would never have to complete an income tax return, ever again!

Reduce Embedded Taxes!

The FairTax would also eliminate the employer's portion of the payroll tax, which is currently adding more than 7% to everything we purchase.  This is part of a hidden tax (known as "embedded taxes") that increase the cost of everything we buy.

Under the current system, corporations are taxed, and corporations treat these taxes as business expenses, which means we, as consumers, wind up paying corporate taxes too (more embedded taxes).  The Fair Tax would eliminate these hidden taxes too!

Our corporate taxes are the 4th highest among the nations of the world, and this significant cost had to added to any goods our US companies seek to sell on the world market.  These corporate taxes make it hard for US companies to compete in the gloabal marketplace.  By eliminating corporate taxes, the FairTax would create a US business advantage that would place our products at an advantage, second to none in the world. Business' (and jobs) would inevitably return to the US.

What about our low-income citizens and retirees?

The FairTax would expand greatly the number of people paying taxes because the current system doesn't tax non-citizens or those working illegally or under the table. This alone would make for a worthwhile debate, but the FairTax doesn't stop here as so many other tax plan ideas have.

The FairTax recognizes that under any tax system, the ones hit hardest are those that are poor and middle class. And while the FairTax as an idea would do more to encourage hard work, saving and growing ones wealth than any other tax system ever, it proposes a very important idea to help the poor just as they are.

The FairTax calls for a monthly "Prebate" that would pay every American household the amount in taxes spent on goods and services up to the poverty line. (Note: Illegal citizens, tourists, etc. do not qualify for the Prebate, only legal citizens.)

To clarify, the government would determine each year what the poverty line is. Then they would determine how much one would pay in taxes on that amount each month. Whatever that amount is, would be paid to every Citizen at the beginning of every month.

For those living below the poverty line they would actually end up with a monthly revenue stream.  Every legal household would receive a minimum of $199 per person, or $398 per couple (current figures), and more if there are children in the household.  This is designed to offset the FairTax they would pay of the basic living costs.  The Fair Tax is ultimately fair, especially to our low and middle class citizens, as well as retirees and those living on fixed incomes.

Everyone pays their fair share!

So the Fair Tax isn't a tax cut -- it's a change in the way we pay taxes, and in who's paying taxes.  No longer will the poor be unfairly burdened with payroll taxes on the 1st dollar earned.  No longer will retirees have to decide whether or not to remarry, based on how it affects their taxes.  No longer does a business have to check the tax code to see what kind of equipment they can buy and depreciate.  No longer will the politically connected millionaire be able to use lobbyists to secure tax loopholes.  No longer will the drug dealer be able to escape his fair share of taxation.

We deserve a tax system that is fair!

Everyone will pay their fair share.  That's why they call it the Fair Tax.  It doesn't matter that an illegal immigrant is received a check or cash, they will be paying their fair share of taxes, every time they go to the checkout stand at Wal-Mart.  It doesn't matter if the drug dealer is buying junk food, jeans, jewelry or a new Jaguar.  That's tax fairness!

We deserve a tax system that is transparent!

Right now, if someone asked you, "How much do you pay in Federal Tax?", you probably don't know.  In fact, a recent Harvard study reports that about 22% of every dollar you spend goes to either pay business taxes or the costs for businesses to comply with the 56,000 pages of tax code.  And that's on top of the income tax (15-35%), Social Security tax (6.5%), Medicare tax (1.45%), capital gains tax (15%) and estate tax (37-55%).

So right now, the amount you pay in federal taxes is hidden.  With the Fair Tax, there will be a statement at the bottom of every retail receipt that tells you that 23% of your purchase went to the government.  That's tax transparency!

We deserve a tax system that is simple!

Right now, the average American spends more than 28-1/2 hours each year, preparing and filing income tax returns.  Many Americans are wondering why the government even needs to know their personal financial information.  (What business does the government have knowing how much we earn, how much we gave and to what charities we gave to, how much you spent on medicines, doctors, or how much income you earned from your hobby?)  With the Fair Tax, gone is the IRS.  Gone is the 1040 tax return, and the rest of the 500+ IRS forms.  Gone are the federal deductions from
your paycheck.  You can control 100% of your income.   It's all "take home pay".  And you get to control how much tax you pay, by deciding how much, and when, you are going to spend your money.  That's tax simplicity!

Experts say the FairTax will work!

Dozens of university economists have studied the FairTax, and have released reports that prove the economics would work. A switch to the FairTax would be revenue-neutral compared to the current system.  It will stimulate the US economy, it will create jobs, it will make US companies competitive in the world marketplace, and it will simplify the lives of Americans.  By broadening the tax base (100% of all American consumers) the FairTax also makes the Social Security and Medicare systems solvent, removing the fear that these programs might otherwise disappear or need to be cut back.  (To read an open letter from these economists click here, or the press release about the letter, click here)

While opponents continue to challenge these reports, misrepresent the facts and downplay the effectiveness of the FairTax the truth is the FairTax would create an environment that fuels economic growth. The only ones that lose are those who are afraid of losing their power to grant the deductions or implement new taxes (politicians) and those who have spent millions of dollars finding the loopholes (some lawyers, accountants and lobbyists).
The FairTax is more than just an idea -- it is a congressional bill that has been drafted by United States Congressman John Linder (R-GA). (To read the entire FairTax Act, click here.   If you want to read a layman's version, click here.)
